The Aran Islands | Travel Info

Aran Island Header

These are the Aran Islands Files and on this page you will find all the info you need to get there, what to expect when you arrive and things to do while on these beautiful isles.

We will also be giving you links to services and people who are our friends and who will be able to expand on the island theme to give you a bigger picture so to speak.

The Islands are located just outside Galway Bay in the Atlantic Ocean lying off the coastlines of Counties Clare and Galway, geographically they are designated as being a part of Galway.

Getting There
To reach the islands you have three choices of places of departure, two by ferry and one by air.

Going by ferry there are a few considerations to be taken into account, namely which Island you want to land on first and where you are located on the mainland.

At this point a look at the map will clarify what I will tell you next so off you go and have a quick look, it has the points of departure marked and also ferry routes between the islands, don't worry I will wait.............

.........Back already, excellent! Did you notice that if you leave from Doolin the first place you land naturally is Inisheer (30 mins) the nearest one of the three islands then you move to Innismaan and finally Inishmore. Where as from Rossaveal (23 miles from Galway City) it's the opposite and it takes about 90 mins to get to Inismore. These are just some things to keep in mind.
