Ennistymon on the Inagh River

Ennistymon Page Header

Ennistymon, County Clare, Ireland.
Below please find road Distance Chart.

This quaint market town is situated on the edge of the Burren about 3 miles from Lahinch and a mere 25 minute drive from Ennis making it an ideal base from which to explore the surrounding North Clare area.

Golfing, angling, and outdoor pursuits are all within easy reach as are the Cliffs Of Moher and the Burren itself. There are local crafts and an outdoor market at the weekends. While at night there is bound to be traditional Irish music in a few of the pubs on the main street.

Home to poets, bards, and artists the town also has a rich and varied history stretching back centuries.

Transport To and From
Bus Eireann the National Bus Company runs a daily service to and from Ennis or if you are arriving from Galway you need the express service to Cork stopping at Ennis and connecting. See Clare regional bus services.

Accommodation and restaurants are in abundance and there is also a selection of self catering establishments to suit every need and budget.

'Father Ted' Location
Ennistymon was used as a location in the sitcom Father Ted and the parochial house set on the fictional 'Craggy Island' is actually McCormack's at Glenquin, on the road from Kilnaboy to Boston.

Eugene's pub in the main street (Eugene MacNamara) has wall to wall memorabilia and location photos from the show on display in the bar, and he is always good for a (tall) story if you can find him!

The Cascades
The Cascades on the Inagh River, start under the bridge on the Lahinch road and flow down a series of narrow rapids towards the Falls Hotel from where an excellent view can be had. There is also an entrance on Main Street just as you come in to town from the Ennis side where you can access a walkway and there are some good viewing points along this path.

The Potato Famine
The Great Hunger (An Gorta Mor 1845 - 1850) when successive years of potato crop failure resulted in the deaths of thousands of people is commemorated by a monument which was erected outside the town in 1995 in memory of the victims associated with this terrible human tragedy.
